We ensure our residents have easy access to snacks and drinks throughout the day and night. Proper nutrition and hydration are essential to health and well-being. Yes
Sit them up straight any time you eat or drink, take small bites and sips, take their time, give pureed foods.
We want mealtime to be easy. With that in mind, avoid struggling with any food battles. Dementia patients can be verbally mean or physically defensive when trying to feed them. Sometimes they will grab you by the wrist and knock the food off the spoon. Communication is key. We frequently tell them in a soft-spoken voice that they need to "take a bite" or "swallow your juice/water" and that they are doing an excellent job after swallowing the food. Colored plates help with appetite and being soft-spoken. We make sure the patients eat before giving her the next bite. It may take time to feed some of them, but it is rewarding to see them clean their plate!
